I'm not sure whether this means that Mr. Trotter's theory of spiritual manipulation is more generalizable than he realizes, or if it means that political parties have supplanted religion as the primary site of spiritual expression in these United States...
...but I definitely recognize those four tools of manipulation from my time as a (very very minor) officer of one of the major political parties.
I don't know if he intends for it to be more generalizable, but that definitely makes sense to me. I suspect those tactics are things he's seen frequently in religious settings, but there's no reason why what he has to say couldn't be applied to other settings
